What is the difference between Dragon Medical and Dragon Medical SP (Small Practice Edition)?

While the two editions are very similar, the Small Practice edition was created and priced especially for those practices with 5 physicians or less.  The thought was "why pay for features you may never use."  See a comparison of features.

Is it true that you have to dictate in a very quiet place or else background noise will interfere with your dictation?

The simple answer is that unless you dictate in an area with a lot of background noise, you do not need to dictate in a “quite zone.”  The important thing to remember is that the key to Dragon’s accuracy is consistency - so make sure that you train Dragon in your normal work environment. If you find that the area has a lot of abnormal background noise, be sure to take a few seconds to recalibrate you microphone (Dragon Tools – Accuracy Center – Check your Audio Settings) and you should be fine.

I have a strong accent and English is not my native language.  Will Dragon Medical be able to understand me?

Yes. While previous versions of Dragon did not always understand strong accents and/or dialects, version 10 has addressed that.  Version 10 now offers Regional Accent Support including: Indian accented English, South East Asian accented English, Southern US accented English, Spanish accented English, and others.

I work in two different offices and have a home PC, how many licenses do I need?

Dragon is licensed by the user, not by computer.  You can install the software on every computer you use and, as long as you are the only person using Dragon, a single license is all you need.  On the other hand, if you and two other physicians share a single workstation but all three of you use Dragon on it, then you would need three licenses, one for each physician.

Can I just buy a copy of Dragon Preferred or Professional and add a medical dictionary/vocabulary to it?

While you could do that, Dragon Medical is not just Dragon Professional with a medical dictionary added so you won’t be pleased with the result.  Dragon Medical versions offer tools and features that are not included in any other version.  Some examples are; the ability to dictate into an Electronic Medical Record (EMR), Medical formatting rules that expand medical abbreviations and follow capitalization rules of medical terms,  HIPAA file storage protects patient confidentiality and helps you meet HIPAA standards. See a comparison of Medical versus non-Medical versions.

When I dictate a weight as "one thirty" Dragon types it as the time "1:30", is there a way to make Dragon recognize it as a weight?

Medical Version 10 has a whole new set of formatting tools and one of them is to format numbers as time. The default for that is set to yes. That being said, there are two ways to deal with your problem.  First, you can dictate patient weights as "one hundred thirty" etc. (do not say one hundred and thirty). Second, you can turn off the Format Times option.  To do that open Dragon Tools, select Formatting, select the General Tab, and uncheck the Format Times box.

When closing Dragon after a dictation session it asks me if I want to save the user files. Should I save the user files every time? What is the advantage of saving the files? Does saving the user files "fine-tune" my profile?

That's really several questions but I think this will cover them.  Saving your user files allows Dragon to incorporate any modifications to your voice profile made during the current session into your permanent profile, thereby "fine tuning" it.  So unless you have had a session where Dragon has made a lot of misrecognition errors, you should always save your user files.

Is there any advantage in letting the computer go into standby or hibernation mode without closing Dragon?
No, in fact there is a big disadvantage.  When you open Dragon and dictate you are actually using a temporary copy of your voice profile.  Updates are not made to your permanent profile until you save your user file with the "Save User File" command or close Dragon and answer yes to the save user file prompt.  So if you simply walk away from the computer after a day of dictation and there is a power surge or the system locks up for any reason, you lose all of the acoustic data for the day.

Is it alright if I do not turn off my computer every night?
It is not a good practice to leave your computer running for days at a time.  The reason for this is that not all software programs are good at cleaning up after themselves. Even if you correctly close them they will not remove all traces of their code from RAM. Unfortunately, these bits & pieces are "stuck" in memory until the computer is rebooted. So the longer you wait between reboots the more junk you will have taking up valuable RAM.  We recommend rebooting once a day or at least twice a week.
